Obituary : Brother Peter P. Staskiewicz, M.S., 88, was born in Newington, on September 17, 1920, son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Jurewicz) Staskiewicz. He attended schools in Newington, and served with distinction in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific and the Philippines for almost four years during World War II. While in New Caledonia he met a Missionary of La Salette, the late Father Henri Durand, M.S. who was a chaplain in the Army. Upon his return to the States he contacted the La Salette Province in Olivet, IL and eventually joined the Community. He entered the La Salette Novitiate in Olivet, on August 4, 1951 and made First Profession of Vows on August 5, 1952. Brother Peter served the La Salette Community at the Novitiate and Seminary in Olivet, and in various Community houses in Milwaukee, WI. He assisted in various capacities but primarily worked as a chef for the La Salette Community and students. For the past 11 years he resided at the La Salette Hartford House in Hartford. In addition to his La Salette confreres, Brother Peter is survived by a brother Leonard Stasky, two sisters Peggy Bechum and Frances Brandt all of Newington; and several nieces and nephews, cousins and close friends.

Obituary :Reverend James P. Hurley, M.S., 90 was born in Hartford, the son of the late James F. and Margaret (Reardon) Hurley. He attended St. Peter School, St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, and Hartford High School. After two years at La Salette College in Hartford, Father Hurley entered the La Salette novitiate in Bloomfield. He studied Philosophy in Altamont, NY and Milford, IA and Theology in Altamont, N.Y. for one year before completing Theology at the newly established La Salette Seminary in Ipswich, MA. Father Hurley was ordained in Hartford by Archbishop Henry J. O'Brien on May 18, 1948. He served as prefect at the La Salette Seminary in Hartford before being named Vocation Director in Jefferson City, MO and Hartford. In 1961 he was appointed Director of Students, Spiritual Director, and Professor at the La Salette College Seminary in Altamont, NY. In 1965 Father Jim was assigned to St. James Parish in Danielson, as Parochial Vicar. After serving there for five years, he was named superior and treasurer of La Salette Seminary in Cheshire. After years on loan to the Diocese of Miami, FL, he served as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of La Salette Parish in Canton, GA. From 1993 until his retirement in 2001 Father Hurley served as Parochial Vicar at St. Ann Church in Marietta, GA. During the last eight years, Father Hurley enjoyed a ministry of presence and prayer while residing at Hartford House with his La Salette confreres. In May of this year he celebrated his 60th Anniversary in the priesthood. In addition to his La Salette Community, Father Hurley is survived by a nephew John Hurley of East Wallingford, VT, a cousin Reverend William McCarthy of Moodus, and numerous cousins from Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Obituary : Brother Robert L. Nichols was born in Southbridge, son of Anna J. (Metras) Nicholas and the late Gerard J. Nichols. He attended Notre Dame Grammar and High schools in Southbridge, graduating in June of 1964. He completed Pre-Novitiate formation for the LaSalette Missionaries at LaSalette Seminary in East Brewster and entered the Novitiate in Center Harbor, N.H. in July 1965, making First Profession on July 2, 1966. His Juniorate program for newly professed brothers was in East Brewster for the first year and at the LaSalette Provincial House in Attleboro for the second year. In the summer of 1968, he was assigned to East Brewster and temporarily to the Novitiate in Center Harbor. In January of 1969 until September 1984, he served at the La Salette Seminary and Shrine in Enfield, N.H. After a year sabbatical, Brother Robert was assigned back to the LaSalette Provincial House in Attleboro where he had been ministering since 1989. Brother Robert was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus, having twice served as grand knight of St. John's Council, No. 404 in Attleboro, and faithful navigator of the Edward Douglas White General Assembly, No. 0398 in Attleboro. In addition to his mother, Brother Robert is survived by five brothers: Arthur, Francis, Richard, George and Paul Nichols; a sister, Clara Kachinski; their spouses, and many nephews, nieces as well as grandnephews and grandnieces.

Obituary :Reverend James P. O'Reilly, M.S., was Born on August 9, 1913 in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland.  He was the son of the late Christopher and Nora Loretta (Coveney) O'Reilly. His mother, after the untimely death of her husband in 1922, moved the family to Tournai, Belgium where Father O'Reilly and his brother, the late Rev. John O'Reilly, M.S., first came to know of La Salette at the Seminary in Tournai. In 1927 Father O'Reilly entered La Salette Apostolic School in Hartford. After completing the novitiate program in Bloomfield and after his first profession, he went to Rome to study Philosophy and Theology and was ordained to the priesthood at St. John Lateran Church in Rome on December 18, 1937.  In 1946 he began his ministry of teaching, a profession to which he devoted many years in La Salette seminaries in Altamont, NY; Milford, IA; Bloomfield, Hartford, Cheshire, CT and Rome, Italy. In 1953 he authored the book "The Story of La Salette" and over the years he used his proficiency in languages to translate many documents and books for the La Salette Community. In 1967 he was appointed to assist the Superior General in Rome with Chapter preparations. He returned to the States the following year.   In addition to his La Salette Community Father O'Reilly is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Reverend Joseph C. Shea, M.S., 77 died at the Hughes Rehabilitation Center in West Hartford, CT on (December 29, 2007). He was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (McKinnon) Shea. Father Shea attended primary school in Roxbury and Dorchester and St. Patrick's High School in Watertown and Boston College and Newman Prep before entering the La Salette Apostolic School in Hartford. Entered in the La Salette novitiate in Bloomfield, on July 1, 1950.  Shortly after ordination Father Joe volunteered to serve in the Morondava Mission in Madagascar and labored there in various mission posts: Antsalova, Miandrivazo and Mandabe. He served as pastor of the Cathedral in Morondava and held diocesan positions of Vicar General and Administrator in charge of the Diocesan Financial-Secretariat Offices. Father remained in Madagascar until 1992 when he returned to the States to serve as Mission Procurator for the Province of Mary Queen in St. Louis, Missouri in the community until 1999 when he was granted permission to return to Madagascar to his beloved people and mission. Father Shea served in the La Salette Mission of Madagascar until 2006 when illness necessitated his return to the States. He has been in residence at the La Salette Hartford House in Hartford, CT since the beginning of this year. In addition to his La Salette Community Father Joe is survived by four brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert and Gertrude Shea of Boston, MA; Dr. Francis and Mary Shea of Bedford, MA; Dr. William and Laura Shea of Lexington, MA; and James and Janice Shea of Alberta, Canada.

Obituary of Fr William Kinney, M.S

Reverend William J. Kinney, M.S., 92, , died (December 7, 2007) at St. Mary Home in West Hartford, CT. He was born in Waterbury, CT, son of the late William J. and Mary (O'Donnell) Kinney and attended schools in Waterbury before entering the La Salette Seminary in Hartford in 1933. He made his first profession of vows at La Salette Novitiate, Bloomfield and continued his studies for the priesthood at La Salette Seminary, Altamont, N.Y. He was ordained a priest May 30, 1942. After ordination Father Kinney was Assistant Master of Novices at Bloomfield and teacher at La Salette Seminaries in Hartford, CT and Milford, Iowa. Later he served as Assistant Pastor at St. Peter Parish, Bassfield, MS and Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Hartford. While at Our Lady of Sorrows he began the broadcast of the La Salette novena on local radio. Father Kinney was appointed first superior of the former La Salette Seminary in Cheshire, CT when it opened in 1961. In 1966 he volunteered for service in the La Salette mission of Argentina, serving in the cities of Córdoba, San Agustine, Las Termas, and LaBanda. Returning home in 1979 he served in Hispanic ministries at St. Michael Church, Hartford, CT and at Good Shepherd and Blessed Trinity parishes in Orlando, FL. In 1986 he was appointed Assistant Pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church, in Phoenicia, NY. Seven years later he returned to residency at Blessed Trinity, Orlando where he remained until returning to Hartford in 1996. In addition to his La Salette Community, Father Kinney is survived by a brother James B. Kinney of Orlando, FL; a sister, Grace Blanchette, of Nevada, TX; a sister-in-law, Jane Kinney, of Pembroke Pines, FL; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Francis, and a sister, Alice Walters.

Fr Alan, son of Cecile M. (Bourassa) Beauregard and the late Paul A. Beauregard was born in Providence. 
Before his death, Alan said "I thank God for the opportunity to serve in a variety of ministries over the years, and am grateful to the following for rich blessings and support: The La Salette Family Retreat Counselors; the Kumeyaay Indian communities of San Diego County, especially the people of the Barona, Viejas and Sycuan reservations and the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Parish; the staff and residents of Father Joe's Villages in San Diego; the staff, officers and inmates of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, especially Maximum Security; the staff, pastoral care team and the patients of the Eleanor Slater Hospital in Cranston and Zambrano, under the auspices of the Diocese of Providence, and the wonderful staff of the Office of Community Services and Advocacy. I am especially grateful to my La Salette brothers for their love and support through the years." Besides his mother, he leaves three sisters: Anne, JoAnne and Elaine Beauregard and the late Laurel Beauregard. "I have been blessed with a loving family - filled with laughter and deep caring."

Fr Roland R. Bedard, M.S., 89, was born in St. Adrien d'Irland, Quebec, Canada, March 29, 1918, son of Damase and Elvina (Boily) Bedard. Father Bedard was ordained to the priesthood on June 15, 1946 after completing studies at the La Salette Seminary in Attleboro, Massachusetts. He served the La Salette Community in a number of offices and positions, including seminary professor, mission director, fundraising director, superior, director of novices, and provincial superior of the Attleboro province. He founded the shrine of Our Lady of La Salette at Double Adobe, Arizona. In 1977, Father Bedard was authorized to minister in the Diocese of Tucson, Arizona for health reasons. He served in the missions of Pirtleville and Elfrida, Arizona and his zeal for ministering with the people of God continued even as his health declined. Father Bedard is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Fr. Stephen G. Dressell, M.S., 85, was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on November 14, 1921, son of Bernard and Rose (O'Brien) Dressell and attended schools in Waterbury before entering the La Salette Apostolic School in Hartford in 1935. He began his Novitiate in Bloomfield in 1940 and made first profession of vows on July 2, 1941. He continued his studies for the priesthood at La Salette Seminary, Altamont, NY and Ipswich, MA and was ordained a priest on March 25, 1947. After ordination Father Dressell volunteered for Burma and was assigned to Akyab, Prome, and Thayetmyo where he labored under difficult conditions for 28 years. He left Burma in September 1975, for a series of assignments that took him to the state of Georgia, serving at St.Francis of Assisi in Cartersville, and pastor at St. Clement in Calhoun, as well as in Argentina and England. When he returned  to the U.S. in 1989, Father Dressell was appointed to team ministry at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Hartford for a brief time. Before being appointed Senior Priest in residence at Our Lady of Sorrows, he served as chaplain at the Veteran's Home and Hospital in Rocky Hill for six years. Since then he has resided at the Hartford House on New Park Avenue. In addition to his La Salette Community, Father Dressell is survived by four sisters. He was predeceased by a brother, Bernard, and a Sister of Mercy, Sister Barbara.
